Lussas 2008

États généraux du film documentaire
20th édition, August 17-23, 2008
Over the past twenty years, the esthetic, political and economic stakes of documentary film have guided the editorial choices of the Etats Généraux. This 20th edition will give us the opportunity to reunite some of the professionals who have participated in the development and recognition of the event and to invite new partners to participate in the urge which has identified the festival since its creation, the desire to educate, screen and reflect on documentary film.
Seminars
Forms of struggle and the struggles of form
Traps of formating or promises of form?

Jean-Louis Comolli, Patrick Leboutte, Marie-José Mondzain
"You never really oppose an organisation of existence without opposing all the language forms belonging to that organisation. Form must correspond to content. At the centre of expression today, I think we have to see the importance of the notion of subverted form, which seems, to me at least, to the basis of this critical art".
Debord, in "On the passage of some people through a relatively short unit of time"
Corps à corps, le corps filmé
Nicole Brenez
The origins of cinema are inextricably connected to the desire to observe bodies, in particular bodies in movement. Muybridge and Marey invented the first machines capable of capturing, analysing and handling movement, within the context of political and economic perspectives we would be wise to question. Comprehension, domestication, profit-making, enslavement of bodies: cinema has been used for such practical goals. But especially in the field of the documentary essay, it has proved capable of requestioning such determining objectives, developing its critical apparatus, analysing the means by which images participate in the control of gesture, behaviour and even our bodily imagination. Braving the risk of censorship, film has struggled to develop unchained, uncontrolable, singular and deviant representations of bodies, reconsidered in all the totality of their dimensions.
Professional meetings
The aim of these meetings is to share questions, information and to mobilise the various professional actors of documentary. Meetings of the "ROD" and "RED" collectives, discussions of the "editorial lines of television companies", of "Documentary Writing and Project Development" with the CNC, of "Documentary writing and Training" with the Lussas Doc School, all these will be enriched by new moments of encounter and exchange now being planned.
